This species is common and widespread in Central and South America, from south Mexico to Paraguay and southern Brazil, and also in Trinidad, Tobago, and Grenada. Carollia perspicillata inhabits tropical evergreen and seasonal forests, often near lakes and wetlands, roosting in caves, hollow trees, and man-made structures; from lowlands to 1,000 m asl. It is a small to medium-sized bat, dark-brown to grey in colour, with relatively short ears, and a short, triangular noseleaf. These bats live in small harems, consisting of a single male, some females and their offspring. Bachelor males roost separately. C. perspicillata feeds primarily on fruit, favouring the family Piperaceae, but also on nectar, pollen and insects.
